Introducing Rover and Context Based Applications
Context is a grouping of information that determines the status and goals of an entity or user. Its around 6:00 PM, the location is the campus or mall, it's the users dinner time, the user likes barbecue. The user consults an app on their mobile device and they are presented with nearby places from them to eat. If they have shown a preference in the past for a certain type of food or if specials are being offered then they are parented with theses selections on their mobile devices. They get eating opportunities they may have missed nearby and life is made better!
The image on the right shows an iPhone running the AlphaVyu App. The Rover Context Server utilized in AlphaVyu automatically created the screen for the user as the tie, place and preferences represented the users most likely context and provide the display.
AlphaVyu and M-Urgency, a public safety application, both utilize the Rover server.
An example of an Rover Server application is shown below.
A Service Tier interfaces the server with available services. These can include location services including GPS, Horus, Pin Point or others, streaming services, interfaces to data bases and other data processing services.
The Context Tier utilizes context rules, data taken from services and then creates a data object containing the relevant data.
The Interface Tier formats the data object as appropriate to the target device. In the illustration we see a screen created for an iPhone.
Rover can be configures to work with any existing database and a myriad of availed services. The Application handler is independent of the data sources so that any device can be serviced with formatted displays of the context acquired information.
